Episode 13: Things Are People Too!

We have our fingers knuckle deep into the zeitgeist of Savage Worlds (don’t worry, a little enlargement is normal at this age, it’s entirely benign and won’t necessarily progress) and a clear pattern has emerged recently: Savages treating non-people-things the way Savage Worlds treats characters.

In the upcoming Pirate setting that we’re working on, we treat Ships like characters, giving them stats and Edges and possibility for advancement, etc. We introduce you to our partner in crime and the workhorse behind the setting, Brett Weihing, and find out a little about his background in gaming and his thought process going in to the new crunch we’re bringing to the pirate setting.

We promised you a sneak peak at some of the concepts we’re playing with for the pirate setting, so here’s an excellent piece by the wizard Rick Hershey of Fat Goblin Games that’s going to be featured in the book.

selkie

Several of you listeners have written in asking about very similar concepts, treating non-characters like characters. Sean Masters asks how to model realm management in Savage Worlds, which can be done with a virtual character (to which Victor Diaz, Eli Kurtz, Eric Lamoureux, Michael Robbins, and Josh Eaves provided answers), and Charles Gerard of the Miskatonic University Podcast asked about how to stat up a village like an abstract NPC.

Next we field your questions about Reach 1 Weapons, First Strike, and Withdrawing from combat (Paul Lawrence from the UK); and how to model anthropomorphic PCs and where to find models for them (Jason Baldwin).

We also debut a new segment called RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES! where we come up with plot hooks for your games based on interesting items in the news.  In this episode, creepy sounds from the dark side of the moon.

We kicked off the episode with a bit of book keeping: We’ve been publishing the podcast for 8 months, and in that time we’ve amassed 156 Google Plus members – 101 Facebook Group members – 62 followers on twitter – 11 ratings Itunes, published 13 episodes (this is the 14th counting ep 0!), wracked up a massive $7.42 in DTRPG Affiliate shillbucks and most importantly reached 14,500 Episode downloads.

We also announce that Ed Wetterman will be the Savage Guest of Honor at GenghisCon 2017, this February in Denver.

Keep your questions, feedback, and suggestions coming.  Keep sharing and rating our shows on social media.  And keep listening.

savagecast_thumb_ep_012_While it might surprise you because sometimes his audio sounds like he lives in a cave, the Savage Mommy actually likes to go out and meet people, and sometimes even talk to them.

At GenCon 2016 he stopped by the Pinnacle booth to get the latest Savage Worlds news from Clint and Jodi Black, follow up with James Walls who appeared on the Kids in Gaming panel from our last episode, Mark Swafford who converted Thunderscape the World of Aden to Savage Worlds, and a slew of Savages who fell in to his trap.

Episode 11: ConTessa Gaming with Kids GenCon Panel

savagecast_thumb_ep_011_We sent the Savage Mommy off to GenCon 2016 to bring back some highlights that the rest of us sad sacks who didn’t get to go missed out on.  Because the RPG community can often look like the Titanic after the life-boats launched, lacking in women and children, we’re excited to bring you this panel discussion.

Friend of show and ConTessa ambassador Darcy Ross — who you can check out on the new Cyper Speak podcast — assembled and moderated a sell-out panel of gaming luminaries, many of whom won well deserved Ennies the night before, covering the vital topic of kids in gaming.

Tabletop Gaming with Kids: Design, Storytelling, Facilitation, & Training the Next Generation

Panelists:
Shanna Germain of Monte Cook games, lead designer of kid-focused RPG “No Thank You Evil” which she debuted at GenCon.
Lynne Hardy of Modiphius Entertainment, lead designer of the tea-time steampunk pulp adventure RPG “Cogs, Cakes & Swordsticks”
James Walls & daughter Carrie Walls, of the Living 4 Crits blog and youtube
John Harness, founder of the RPGs for Kids Facebook community

A panel discussion on challenges, solutions, & joys of playing tabletop games with kids (your own and not). This panel [brought] together some great minds coming with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. The first half of the panel [was] questions from the moderator on topics of challenges and tips for gaming with kids, the second half [was] questions collected from audience members.

Since Savage Worlds is a gender and kid friendly system, it’s a popular choice to introduce kids to gaming and a platform that doesn’t pigeon hole or punish female characters or players.

After the panel, Savage Mommy interviewed panelist James Walls which you can catch in our next GenCon2016 episode along with short interviews with several other GenCon2016 Savage Worlds folks.

Episode 10: Talk Nerdy to Me

savagecast_thumb_ep_010_We asked you to reach out to us at our SavageCast email, uproar@savagecast.com, with your Savage Worlds questions, and you did. So we get to the business of answering them.

We really enjoy interacting with the Savage Worlds community, so keep those questions coming.

Thank you to our large and growing listener base for supporting us through our first 10 episodes. Don’t forget to leave ratings and reviews on iTunes, as this helps us build the community and the quality of our shows.

00:01:30 – Savage Pirates

So, ye be startin’ up a new podcast do ye? Think ye c’n sail these waters where many’ve perished afore ye?

Seriously, you guys are doing a great job, I’m really enjoying your podcast a lot.

But on to my question:

What resources would you suggest for someone wanting to run a pirate game. I’m not really interested in having a bunch of magic as I’m leaning more towards a game with an historical feel to it, something along the lines of, “Black Sails.”

Additionally are there any setting rules, edges, or hindrances that you would suggest be included or excluded?

Thanks, and keep up the great show,

00:16:45 – Savage Voltron

Hi guys,

Good crossover episodes, really enjoyed every second and hope to see one with the Happy Jacks guys.

I recently GMed my first Con game and I find myself thinking “Wow, that would be a great Con game” and furiously scribbling notes for future games I want to run. While watching the new Voltron cartoon I got pumped and thought maybe I could try running Savage Voltron at a con but just couldn’t figure out how in the heck to do a fight with a giant robot comprised of smaller robots the players were piloting. Do you have any suggestions for how to achieve that “Giant Robot fueled by teamwork” feeling present in all the Kaiju movies and cartoons?

Thanks and keep it Savage

00:23:25 – Stacking Modifiers
00:40:11 – Savage Pro Wrestling

Hello Savage Cast crew!

I am a new Savage world DM coming from D&D (and recently running a lot of games on roll20). I tried savage worlds at Gencon last year and loved the flexibility and just recently ran a few ÉTU one sheets to get my feet wet before I run The Flood for deadlands this fall. I need assistance in two areas:

1) it seems in the one shots I ran, the modifiers were stacking up and it was taking too long to calculate if something succeeded. Am I doing this wrong or making this too difficult?

2) I am a big home brew setting person and a big pro wrestling fan. with the flexibility of the system, I really would love to do a pro wrestling setting because it matches the bigger then life characters, and the fast, furious fun ideal of savage worlds. I was thinking of using wrestling moves as arcane powers with the power point system but I wanted to get your idea of a good way to make wrestling moves or maybe even some setting rules. Sorry about the long email but this system inspires me with so many ideas and none of my friends actually play. Keep up the great job!

00:50:47 – Mixing Savage Settings

Dear Savagecast,

First time caller, long time listener.

I was wondering, given the massive number of Savage settings and source books from a variety of genres, what are your feelings on mixing them? If you’re in favor of it, what are some settings you like to mix? If you’re not in favor of it, why?

Looking forward to hearing your perspective on the topic.

Love the show,

Episode 9: Wild Die Crossover

savagecast_thumb_ep_009_This town ain’t big enough for TWO Savage Worlds Podcasts, so the Mommy and Bull faced off with Jaime and Eric from The Wild Die Podcast to lay claim to this dusty outpost on the podcast frontier. Or maybe we were just being neighborly and sat down to break bread with our broadcasting neighbors. Or maybe we got all 1% as the White Collar answer to their Blue Collar appeal. Or maybe we lost a bet. Or they won one. Or something.

Since their listeners actually send them questions, we answered a few of them over the course of two episodes, one on their podcast and the second one right here. We covered topics like “What one rule would you add to the rules,” “does Savage Worlds work with Theater of the Mind,” and “what dirty tricks do you use against your players?”

Catch Wild Die Podcast Episode 7: The SavageCast Crossover right here.

In the second half we talk about the Bennie Economy, a fast and dirty guide to Combat, and WTF is a plot point campaign anyway.

Episode 7: RIFTS Enter the Odd Squad 2 of 2

savagecast_thumb_ep_007_We’re back with the BIG finale of the Savage Worlds RIFTS actual play of SPF’s Enter the Odd Squad. If you missed the first part, give it a listen now.

Before we get to the finale, our RIFTS veterans share their fond memories of world-destroying character builds from the old school Palladium rule set, and SPF hints at upcoming projects (Prowlers & Paragons) he has on the back burner, which will be coming to kickstarter later this year.

Episode 6: RIFTS Enter the Odd Squad 1 of 2

savagecast_thumb_ep_006_Back on March 19th, 2016 the SavageCast got together with Sean Patrick Fannon, his better half Carinn Seabolt, and a crew of RIFTS veterans but Savage Worlds initiates John Ross and Toby Carpenter, hosted by the first lady of gaming herself Wendy Reischl to play in Enter the Odd Squad, a Savage Worlds – RIFTS mashup adventure which ports characters from half a dozen existing Savage Worlds settings into the world of RIFTS, recasting them as iconic roles familiar to that world.

Because this epic adventure takes advantage of the possibility — but not necessity — to bring in other Savage Worlds properties to RIFTS, the powers that be at Pinnacle asked us to hold off releasing our actual play until the end of the Kickstarter as not to give people the wrong first impression of what Savage Worlds RIFTS was necessarily about.

As there is now a pure Savage Worlds RIFTS as written actual play out there which highlights 100% RIFTS fluff on top of Savage Worlds crunch, we’re free to share with you this fun adventure which also brings in Savage Worlds properties into the picture as well.  We understand that PEG didn’t want to freak out the RIFTS purists, but we think that once they see that they can have all of the RIFTS flavor they want, that listening to SPF’s Enter the Odd Squad adventure just might lure them to experience other SW product lines as well.

The RIFTS veterans who played certainly felt like they got all the RIFTS style action they wanted, and Savage Mommy and Bull agreed that this was Savage Worlds turned up to 12.  Our hostess Wendy and her German-speaking horse had some of the most epic moments of the day and poor Carinn’s priestess showed just how lethal a RIFTS game can be while she wasn’t obliterating enemies with her divine smite.

The Cast of Characters, provided by Sean Patrick Fannon:

* Christmas Carson, a Harrowed Texas Ranger with a robot mustang horse. [Deadlands], Played by Wendy Reischl

About Deadlands –
Pinnacle’s flagship product is Deadlands, a horrific journey into the “Weird West.” Mysterious beings called the Reckoners have given life to monsters and magic, causing history to divert from July 4th, 1863 forward. The South has won its independence, California has shattered into a labyrinth of flooded sea-canyons, and a mysterious super-fuel called “ghost rock” has spawned as much war and strife as it has “steampunk” devices.

Players are steely-eyed gunfighters, card-slinging sorcerers called hucksters, mysterious shamans, savage braves, mad scientists, and more who battle against evil and attempt to prevent the “Reckoning.”

* Rupert the Wise, a clever metal-and-stone Golem Techno-Wizard [Accursed], Played by John Ross

About Accursed –
This tale begins with a world of dark fantasy and perilous adventure, where the forces of evil have triumphed.

In such a world, those who remain uncorrupted by wickedness must rely upon monsters to fight against the darkness. Witches have ruled the land since the last battles of conquest, but their Grand Coven has been sundered, leaving behind remnants of a once-mighty army. The remnants of the horde include captured citizens of the conquered nations that fought as the Witches’ shock troops.

These are the Accursed—the Witchmarks burned into their flesh and souls transformed these men and women into monstrous forms. Now, unable to return to their former lives, the Accursed wander the land, giving aid to those in need in an attempt to atone for past sins. Some have joined the Order of the Penitent, an organization devoted to ridding the world of the Witches and their evil influence. Others offer their skills as warriors, alchemists, and spies to the highest bidder. Yet others have succumbed to corruption, greed, or insanity.

Light has failed, darkness is ascendant—only those bearing the forms of monsters can stand against the tide of the Witches’ evil. The Accursed are this world’s only hope—they must learn to embrace their curse or to fight against it, and find some way to free themselves forever of their Witchmark.

This is the world of Accursed.

* The Avalonian, a Rippertech-enhanced Masked Crusader Juicer [Rippers], Played by Chris Fuchs

About Rippers –
Do you believe in monsters? Well you better, because they’re out there and they mean business!

In Rippers, the Cabal of evil formed under the leadership of the monstrous Jack the Ripper had the Victorian world on its knees, and your team fought back. Using Rippertech pulled from the creatures of hell and implanted into yourselves, you are called once again to save the world for Queen and country!

* Quintus Pompeius Magnus, a Roman Triari Centurio who has taken up the path of a Cyber-Knight. [Weird Wars Rome], Played by Christopher Landauer

About Weird Wars Rome –
Her legions strode forth from the center of civilization—west to England, east to Asia, north to Germany, south to Egypt—and conquered most of the known world. In their travels, the Legions found things that would be disbelieved by slave, citizen, and senator alike. War elephants, wild dervishes, and creatures beyond description met them at every turn.

The glory of the Empire spread to the corners of the earth, but its shadow found even darker places—and things—that defied record.

Join the forces of Rome and battle through the ages against her enemies. Discover the terrible secrets left out of the history books. Save your shieldmates. Save the Empire.

* Rock-and-Roll, a reformed villain with the powers of a very strong (but not very bright) earth elemental. [Necessary Evil], Played by Toby Carpenter

About Necessary Evil –
When all the super heroes of the world are blown to kingdom come by an army of invading aliens, who will save the day? Evil…

The only forces left to take on the alien menace are the crafty and self serving super villains!

Note that this particular character has definitely taken up the mantle of “hero” now.

* Kellindia, an aevakar Priestess of Light, fully embracing the Mystic path. [Shaintar], Played by Carinn Seabolt

About Shaintar –
“It’s Like Lord of the Rings Meets Die Hard.”
Every great tale has a beginning, and yours begins here, in the realm of Shaintar (Pronounced “Shine-tar”). At once familiar and alien, you will come to know it as a place you understand completely, while still being perplexed and dazzled by its mysteries. As you seek out the answers to those mysteries, all the while doing battle with villains and monsters both archetypal and alien, you will come to understand a primal truth: Shaintar, this world with thousands of years of history behind it, stands on the brink of dramatic, possibly catastrophic change. How this change ultimately manifests, what damage it will wreak, or what growth it will engender, will depend entirely upon you.

During the first hour of our RIFTS actual play, Sean Patrick Fannon dropped a lot of details about the mechanics and features of the upcoming setting, which I’ve outlined here for those of you looking for more crunch and details about Savage RIFTS:
